“Fathers and Daughters” is an upcoming American-Italian drama film directed by Gabriele Muccino and starring Russell Crowe and Aaron Paul. It is based on the 2012 Black List script by Brad Desch. A Pulitzer-winning writer grapples with being a widower and father after a mental breakdown, while, 27 years later, his grown daughter struggles to forge connections of her own. On a sad note, James Horner was originally supposed to write the score a year ago. In perspective, replacing him doesn’t seem like a good decision now… We would have had one more score…but he was replaced a year ago by, who will always have a special place in my heart for writing two seasons of “La piovra”, the two flashback seasons.

There’s that subtle, almost religious violin tone in the opening theme, a thing I’ve noticed and loved before in his scores. “Blackout” gives me hope for this score. The next couple of cues are nice and melodic and they make me think of the past. There’s nothing memorable about them, they are all about the moment when I listen to them. They are light romantic pieces and this sound will recur throughout the score.

I love the piano. And anyone who loves the warm sound of this instrument will love this score. There’s not much else other than piano, or let’s say the sound of the piano dominates this score. It’s nothing moving or goose bumps inducing and you will not associate this score with the movie because I’m sure you’ve heard themes like these many times before. It’s just that nice, romantic piano music cannot be discarded or ignored, at least not by me.

The quiet flow of the piano is interrupted every now and then by some strings that make the score run faster and more agitated. Those are moments when I feel my heart jump and the score pulls me out of the constant piano haze and challenges me more. “From night to dawn” is the moment that makes me fall in love with “Fathers and daughters”. Just listen to this cue at first if you don’t have time for more. It will charm you and move you. It’s not a representation of the emotion that runs through the score but it’s one of the deepest moments.

“Fathers and daughters” is a sad and soulful score. It is also very beautiful film music. As always you can’t go wrong with an Italian composers. Some moments are deep and heartbreaking while others are just nice. But the general atmosphere of this score will eventually get to you.
